What are Pixels and Resolution?- Explained

We come up with a lot of terms almost every day. But we don't really know what do the terms actually mean. As far as the digital world is concerned we come across the terms like Pixel and Resolution quite often. Today let us know more about them and how do the actually affect us.

PIXELS
Pixel is actually the abbreviated form of
"Picture elements". Any image ( be it an actual picture of an object or written information ) which you see on your monitor or smartphones are stored in the form of these pixels. Pixel are actually the smallest unit of information or coloured unit that produce the images in front of us. They are primarily round square or rectangular in shape.
These pixels are arranged in 2-D matrices and are very small in size ( we will give you an idea of how small pixels actually are). These pixels actually are RGB units meaning they can produce Red Green and Blue colours. As there are a lot of these pixels the colours get blended and finally producing the actual colours you see on the screen.
RESOLUTION
Resolution actually refers to the pixel count or the number of pixels available on the display. The more the resolution more is the number of pixels are present thus in turn increasing the image detail. The common ways the resolution is represent in the form of length(horizontal grid ) and breadth (vertical grid). For instance the resolution of a smartphone is 1080 x 1920 - this actually means 1080 multiplied by 1920 which comes to 2,073,600 (2 million pixels or 2 mega pixels)pixels or smallest coloured units present on the screen.
Another convention of representing it is in form of a single number like 8megapixel camera for example 8 mega pixels refer to million pixels that means the camera sensor is comprised of 8 million pixels.
As you have now come to know what pixels and resolution are let us give you an idea of how small the pixels are. Let us suppose to have a smartphone with 5 inches (12.7 centimeters) of screen 16:9 aspect ratio( ratio between the height and width of a screen ) and have a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels.
Therefore on doing some simple calculation we come to know the area of the screen is about
5.41 square centimeter. Now we know that we have a 2,073,600(1080 x 1920)pixels to be fitted in that area. Thus on dividing the area by the number of pixels we come to 0.00000261 centimeter or 2.61 micron which is the size of each pixels. Quite small right!!!
